Source of The Mindful Workforce Competencies

Although many recent studies call urgently for development of transferable workplace competencies in students, there is no agreement among them as to what those competencies are . There is no standardized listing, no centrally-accepted research. Thus the key studies mostly rely on narrative descriptions or on organizational frameworks (such as the SCANS report) which are not universally adopted as the set of target workforce competencies.

Instructional efforts such as The Mindful Worker must therefore rely not on universal listings of competencies but on cross-referencing, interpretation, application to practical experience, and intuition in selecting a set of target workplace competencies. The matrix below identifies the competencies mentioned or implied in eight key national studies (listed below matrix). Interestingly, some of the competencies which are most loudly called for in articles and columns (e.g., ethics and leadership) are not widely cited in these broad reports. Oversight? Assumption? Disagreement? The answer is uncertain, but they are included in The Mindful Worker because they seem so prevalent in other materials and so logical in everyday application.
