Becoming a Successful Science Student

Six Readiness Factors

  • Readiness Factor #1 Motivate Yourself to Study
    • Your attitude toward learning is the single most important factor in academic success. By assessing your motivation, you can build motivational strategies into your daily study activities.
  • Readiness Factor #2 Develop Readiness for Every Lecture
    • How to insure you come to every lecture ready to learn and already knowing the material will be emphasized. A simple preview method will greatly increase how much you understand and remember of your course lectures.
  • Readiness Factor #3 Review Your Notes After Every Lecture
    • Lecture material is particularly essential in a science course. Yet for many, notetaking is an entropic process: few of us get even the main points into our notes and what we do get down may be too disorganized to help during exam review. Tips will be taught on how to reduce the entropy and transform your notes into a powerful mastery tool.
  • Readiness Factor #4 Make and Use Flow Charts to Understand Key Physical Processes
    • Learning science is based on developing a deep understanding of physical processes and how each process works. Apply the power of visual organizers to increase your understanding and memory of complicated scientific processes.
  • Readiness Factor #5 Construct Comparison Charts to Master Important Distinctions
    • Science began with individuals who were very talented at comparing things. Botanists must master differences between plants; geologists must master subtle differences between rocks and strata. A comparison chart is the major tool for this aspect of scientific study. Constructing a comparison chart provides a handy overview, facilitates review, and aids memory by reducing a lot of material to just a few items.
  • Readiness Factor #6 Prepare Systematically for Exams
    • Science exams, especially in math oriented classes like physics and chemistry, usually emphasize solving problems, and your exam review time must focus primarily on working problems.
