Focus on Mathematics Lecture Series

The Focus on Mathematics Series specifically addresses the very serious problems we encounter today in trying to teach mathematics to college students. Each text emphasizes study skills for mathematics. All but the college algebra text contain an Introduction on study skills. The authors know your students and are interested in teaching them real (understood-not memorized) mathematics.

The Focus Ovals

The theme of the text demands that students constantly focus on the specific idea being taught at any moment. Each book encourages students to learn mathematics properly.

Definitions

Each text places value on words in mathematics and displays the definitions.

Exercises are Magnificent

Some are instructional, some are drill and practice, and others force the students to constantly integrate their knowledge. You'll find plenty of exercises in each textbook for all your needs:

  • Part A exercises are instructional in nature and reteach the foci of each unit.
  • Part B exercises are drill and practice.
  • Part C exercises are comprehensive reviews keyed to previous units in the book.

Ancillaries are Not Gimmicks

All software, videotapes, and testing materials were specifically developed for the series by the authors. With an adoption you will receive ancillaries free and you won't have to work trying to coordinate them with the text and its approach.

Additional Information about The Interactive Mathematics Series

The Interactive Mathematics Series is designed to aid the student in learning its material.

These texts possess strong teaching qualities that virtually assure the conscientious student of steady, confident progress, and at the same time, provides continuous opportunities to get help where and when needed. Solid mathematics, quality instruction, and personal assistance are the hallmark of this series of texts.

The quality of the mathematical content and instructional use have been thoroughly documented in a wide range of situations and with great numbers of students. Carefully developed, revised, and perfected over the last 25 years, this is print instruction at its finest.

Because of the design of these books, the student can expect other dramatic improvements in the study and learning of mathematics. One of those advantages is the student's ability to vary the pace of instruction to match their ability to learn. At times, a student needs to work slowly through the instruction and carefully ponder each new concept. At other times, the student grasps the material quickly and can accelerate their learning rapidly through the material. As a result, most students will move through this material more quickly than in a regular class situation.

Another great advantage is that students have an opportunity to learn to ask intelligent, specific questions about the mathematics in a context that encourages and does not threaten. Study skill deficiencies can be corrected while maintaining traditional levels of achievement and rigor.

The books and online courses contain many opportunities for the student to make wise decisions about the level of understanding achieved. Each chapter begins with an Objectives Test that illustrates, by example, all of the concepts and skills which are to be presented.

Each chapter is broken into units in a way that divides the content into topics of such length that it gives the student a way of organizing their own studying to make it most effective. Most units are designed to be completed in a single study session and, for best results, should be handled in that way. The unit ends with a Feedback which is an opportunity for the student to test the level of understanding achieved.

The chapter ends with a Mastery Test that is similar to the Objectives Test. When a student can do all the problems correctly on a Mastery Test, it indicates a complete understanding of all the material in the chapter.

Answers for all problems in the Tests and Feedbacks are included. Good learning can occur only when the student is aware of what is known and what still needs to be learned.

Comprehensive testing materials accompany all texts, with multiple forms of all examinations provided to ensure mastery learning. The texts also include online computer instruction.
