Skills for Multiple Choice Test
The writing test contains
two types of items: usage and sentence correction. The purpose is to measure an
ability to recognize and use standard written English correctly and effectively.
The areas of knowledge most likely to be the basis of test items are shown below.
A. Forms of Adjectives (including comparative/superlative)
B. Forms of Adverbs
C. Use of Adjectives and Adverbs
D. Capitalization
E. Comparisons
F. Conjunctions
i. Coordinating Conjunctions (i.e., words that show the relation between words, phrases, or clauses), such as and, but, or, nor, for, so
ii. Correlative Conjunctions (i.e., pairs of conjunctions that appear in idiomatic expressions), such as either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, both...and
iii. Conjunctive Adverbs, such as furthermore, likewise, however, therefore, thus, meanwhile
iv. Subordinators, such as before, when because, although, if so that
G. Diction (i.e., recognizing
wherther a word is used correctly and appropriately in its context)
H. Idiomatic Expressions
I. Modification
J. Negation
K. Nouns, including number agreement
L. Parallelism
M. Prepositions
N. Pronouns, including agreement in number, case, and reference

P. Punctuation: comma, semicolon, colon, apostrophe
