Identifying Errors in Idiom and Word Choice

Appropriate Words or Expressions

The words chosen must be appropriate to the message that is intended. Words that convey an exact meaning are denotative terms. Words that carry emotional, humorous, or negative associations are connotative terms.

An example of the misuse of the denotative word "addiction" is:

Martin has the addiction of biting his fingernails.

The sentence could be corrected by:

Martin has the habit of biting his fingernails.
