Essay Tests

Try to take each sample test in one sitting so that it parallels conditions on the official test. That way, your experience will better prepare you for the actual test.

The writing test presents a special problem in preparing for taking the official test. You will not know the subject for your essay. Your best preparation is to write 150-200 words on a variety of subjects. You will begin to get an idea of the required length and the amount of time needed to complete it. If possible, have someone else read some of your essays and make comments on them. If you have trouble with selecting subjects, here are a few to get you started:

  • “Why did you choose the particular college that you are (or will be) attending?”

  • “Some people think that there are advantages to attending college immediately after high school. What are the disadvantages?”

  • “If you could change one important decision that you made earlier in your life, what changes would you make?”

Remember, the best way to learn to write is by writing!
