Interactive Intermediate Algebra

If you need no directions go directly to the "List of Chapters" on the menu at your left.

Directions

You are going to learn Intermediate Algebra by participating in a conversation. The conversation is broken into very short segments which are called frames. Each frame has three parts:

1. Each frame gives a small bit of information and/or an example. Then you are asked to respond to something about it.

2. You need to conscientiously respond.

If the response blank is like this , you may place your cursor in the box and type your reply.

If the response blank is like this ___________, you will not be able to type your reply and must use paper and pencil to work it out carefully.

3. After your response is complete, the frame will tell you, in red, what an appropriate or correct response would be. You will always know immediately whether you understood the frame's lesson.

You are in complete control of the flow of this conversation. One type of control you exercise is located on the green screen to your left. Place your cursor on the blue colored words "Menu Choices" and you will see how to use them.

Menu Choices

The choices on the green Menu screen allow you to move forward or backward in the instruction. With a few clicks on the choices provided on the Menu you can move anywhere in this course just as you could flip through an entire textbook.

A Menu with a green background will always appear at your left. Each menu choice available will be blue in color and have a blue underline. The Menu now at your left offers four choices. The Menu Choices will show you the recommended sequence of the material as well as giving you control over opportunities to preview (look ahead) or review (look back).

A second type of control you exercise is listed as a choice on your Menu screen. Place your cursor on the blue colored words "Frame Buttons" and you will see how to use them.

Frame Buttons

As stated earlier, each frame will give some information and then ask you to respond to something about that information. Work out your response (probably using pencil and paper) and then click on the Check Response button.

The frame will show you, in red, an appropriate response. If your reply agrees with it, then the Next button will take you to the following frame.

If you missed something or simply want to review before continuing, click on the Back button which will take you to the previous frame.

The scroll bar on the right of the white screen allows you to move up or down upon the screen.

A third type of control you exercise is listed as a choice on your Menu screen. Place your cursor on the blue colored words "Mentor Button" and you will see how to use it.

Mentor Button

Help is available whenever you need it and is obtained by clicking on the Mentor Button.

The mentor button brings up an e-mail screen for you to send a message for help, comment, etc. Use the mentor button whenever you want to extend your conversation outside the scope of the computer program. If you are stuck and want some help, then all you need state is your location in the program (chapter, unit, frame number). If you can describe your problem more fully that is fine, but it is not necessary. If your message is not directly related to a particular part of the conversation, just state it as clearly as possible. Whatever your message, you will receive a personal e-mail reply within 24 hours.

To see how the mentor button works, click on the button below.

Click on the "Back" button below to return to the beginning of these directions or select the "List of Chapters" on the Menu screen.
